If you choose Make Movie Self-Contained: 

A new file is created, in which the movie’s contents are stored in the exact sequence that you cut and pasted them. Any segments you have copied from other movies are included in this file. 

The size of the file changes to reflect the changes you made. The new movie has no dependencies on any other movies.
